agriculture system that enables farms of all sizes to be profitable and contribute to their local economies.
This empowerment initiative is driven by the adoption of sustainable agriculture practices that not only increase productivity but also significantly reduce the negative environmental impact of farming activities.

"It is often said that if you educate a woman, you educate a whole generation. The same is true when we empower women across the board, not only through access to knowledge, but also to resources, to equal opportunities, and by giving them a voice."
Women's Empowerment in Sustainable Agriculture
The Women's Empowerment in Sustainable Agriculture (WESA) Project is our initiative to empower Africa's female farmers in overcoming the many barriers they encounter due to patriarchal and cultural norms. In implementing this initiative, SAFI has identified a farm located in Midvaal Local Municipality in Gauteng province, South Africa to utilize as an eco-friendly model project for empowering local women in poultry farming through practical training.
Why poultry farmers? Poultry is one of the most popular subsistence farming activities as it is relatively easy to engage with, has low unit costs and has low input costs (if it is free range). Poultry is one of the most important natural sources of protein for impoverished rural people.

Female farmers face many challenges to include access to finance, to the broader agricultural value chain, training on sustainable agriculture practices and ongoing support. On their own it may prove to be difficult and even impossible to penetrate these resources unless they form strategic partnerships through social impact investors and non-profit organizations.
